Tremulous - New Map Released

A new Tremulous map has been released cleverly named Flap well at least I think it was named that because of the low gravity tubes in it hence flapping/flying around like a bird. :)
Here is what the devs (Overflow) had to say about it.

The map is fairly symmetrical in that the two paths to each base are identical. However, each base itself is quite different. One of the major differences is the inclusion of a dark fog in the alien base, something which I hope will provide for some interesting battles. The map is somewhat unique in that it is very vertical, requiring the use of jump pads to get up, and low gravity tubes to get down without getting hurt.

In order to get to the enemy base, you must first travel up to the very top level where the two paths from each base all meet, then choose a path and jump down to their level….

My screen shots and impressions coming up after the jump.

Well after trying to find a server with the map currently being played failed (obviously such a new map), I just went off and created a local server to test it out and have a look around. The first thing I noticed was that this is the map that is in the Tremulous promo video at the very end, and it is indeed perfectly symmetrical, with a few adjustments to how the base rooms are laid out. This map would be very easy to get disoriented in, which is a good thing that the direction arrows have been placed to make navigating the map effective and easy. The jump pads are a very cool new thing placed into a Tremulous map that I have never seen before, and greatly add to the game for without them the map would simply not work, due to the two level structure of it.

The alien base having a fog I also think will create some very interesting battles indeed, as humans would not be able to effectively use a Mass Driver in the corridors leading up to the base, due to the limited visibility. The fog will also open up great attack opportunities for sneaky dretches.

The jump pads I think are a very cool new innovative addition to this map and I think that several maps will follow suite with having jump pads replacing stairs. The use of the arrows again make using the jump pads easier differentiating which side goes up and which side goes down.

Center arena.

The center arena of the map (pictured above) I don’t think will have to much combat to be honest since, I think that most of the fighting (typical to Tremulous game play) is fought on fronts near bases and not out in the open, however in this map the only way to get to from one base to the other is to pass through this center area so if a team could get a strong foothold in the middle their chances of survival would increase, if they could effectively cover both entrances to the bases.

Overall I think that this map will become one of the most played maps like ATCS due to its simplicity in terms of the map layout and the size of it, with a great deal of strategies for both the aliens and humans to take control of the map. You can download the map via the Tremulous site here.
