With the site being down the last few days due to being dugg for my Wiisports boxing headspin KO post, there is a fair bit of gaming info to be caught up on.

So here is the mini Stargate Worlds recap for the major things released in the last few days.

Stargate Worlds has announced that they are using SpeedTree. News about the archetypes has been announced as well as a new desktop wall paper.

More after the break

Stargate Worlds has announced that they are using SpeedTree. For those of us who do not know what SpeedTree is the quote below from Gamasutra sums it up beautifully.

The SpeedTree software delivers highly realistic digital trees and plants, with adjustable wind effects, user-configurable LOD transitions, and an included library of hundreds of tree, plant and marine models representing more than 170 core species. The tool has already found use in a number of highly regarded next-generation titles, such as THQ’s Siants Row and Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, both for the Xbox 360. In addition, developers of Webzen’s upcoming MMOFPS Huxley are also utilizing the SpeedTree technology.

The archetypes in Stargate Worlds are what will in my opinion make or break the game. But I think that Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment are going to get this right, well thats how it certainly appears to be panning out from what is found over at Ten Ton Hammer.

Asgard – The Asgard are the undisputed masters of technology in the Stargate universe. Similar in appearance to the grey aliens of popular myth, the Asgard are frail physically but rely on drones that hover around them, ready to attack, defend or analyze when called upon. Asgard can also call upon their mighty starships to deliver devastating orbital bombardments when faced with overwhelming odds. The Asgard are jack-of-all-trades characters with a wide skill set limited by the number of drones they can activate at any one time – generally just one. The Asgard can shift from a healer to a tank to a damage dealer by activating a new drone.

That is a very good way of attacking the way Asgards will fight in the game since they are very small and fragile in the show and would most likely not be able to hold any kind of weapon.

Scientist – Teams regularly encounter advanced or esoteric technology when they explore new worlds, and this is where the Scientist Archetype is invaluable. Scientists can specialize in analyzing, repairing and using technological devices, using new technologies to craft personal upgrades and creating battlefield emplacements like gun turrets, shields or target inhibitors. Like the Archaeologist, Scientists are skilled at puzzle solving, though of a technological nature. They also can choose to be adept at healing and resurrection technology.

Ooo I like the idea of being able to create battlefield emplacements, would be good to have a few of those turrets covering the Stargate, or shields over a command outpost. Being able to create your own upgrades that you could sell for in game resources sounds like a good idea to me, not mention the extra weapons and armour you may be able to create for yourself and your team to ensure your survival in the SG universe.

Commando – This Archetype represents highly-specialized warriors like covert agents, Green Berets and Delta Force. Commandos use stealth, demolitions and powerful single-target ranged attacks to disrupt, confuse and neutralize enemies. While able to use stealth effectively, the Commando Archetype also has access to detection technologies used to thwart stealthy foes. They can’t use the variety of weapons available to the Soldier, but they make up for it with access to the sniper rifle and the ability to set up and detect traps.

Naturally there always has to be a stealth agent in an MMO that can sneak into enemy strongholds and make havoc on your opponents or for scouting ahead of your SG squad as you head out on a mission, since they get access to a sniper rifle they may decide to hold back of the team and cover them or be used in a tactical manner, for luring enemies into traps where they can easily be sniped out. The possibilities of a commando are endless.

That is just a few small archetypes that I thought would be of interest, for the full list check here. But from what we have seen so far I really like the archetypes that are going to be in Stargate Worlds and I think that Stargate Worlds will truly be one of the best MMO’s because that is certainly how it appears to be shaping up.

One last quick thing I better not forget the desktop wallpaper that was recently released you can find links to it here on the Stargate Worlds site.
