Ive been playing Tremulous for quite some time now and I have to say that it is a fantastic game, that I am going to share with you.
Tremulous is a multi player game based off the Q3 engine, that has elements of both FPS and RTS woven together to create some fantastic game play. The game is basically your FPS style of game that incorporates base building to add a whole new level of game play, which is where the RTS side of the game comes in. (more on that later)
Tremulous is open-source meaning that its free software, Tremulous comes ready to download and play for Windows and Linux users with an unofficial Mac build as well (so theres nothing to stop you trying it out). It is by far the best free game that I have played and really worth trying, and being free you’ve got nothing to lose :).
Basics of the game: Tremulous is an Alien Vs Human multi player game where both teams have the single objective of killing their opponents spawns and eliminating any left over players, sounds pretty easy right? well its not always because Tremulous adds an RTS element where both teams can build upon their starting base or completely scrap it and move to a new location, this is where the fun begins.
Aliens are generally not capable of shooting with the exception of the Advanced Dragoon and advanced Granger, so to kill a human player you have to get in close for a melee attack, humans on the other hand play out the game in an FPS style incinerating enemy aliens with flamers or sawing them up with the painsaw just to name a couple of ways of destroying them. Aliens are of course not without there perks, including the ability to easily move base or setup a forward attack, and the ability to evolve to stronger versions with evolution points.
The RTS mode of the game gives you the ability to build your base up or in the case of some nuisances destroy them. The building mode is played out from within the FPS view, and anyone can build when ever they feel like which often causes potential problems, but thats all part of the fun.
