The thing that really makes GamerZines stand out from the crowd of conventional gaming magazines is, that it’s freely published on the internet for anyone to easily access and read, and the interactive media that is found inside means that it can go far beyond your conventional print magazine, videos, quizzes, forms and many more things all add together to give a dynamic experience instead of the static one you receive from your normal print magazine. Add all of that together with knowledgeable authors that are in the gaming scene, makes for one fantastic, free online magazine.

Tremulous - New Map Released

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007

shot0019_240x180.jpg
A new Tremulous map has been released cleverly named Flap well at least I think it was named that because of the low gravity tubes in it hence flapping/flying around like a bird. :)
Here is what the devs (Overflow) had to say about it.

The map is fairly symmetrical in that the two paths to each base are identical. However, each base itself is quite different. One of the major differences is the inclusion of a dark fog in the alien base, something which I hope will provide for some interesting battles. The map is somewhat unique in that it is very vertical, requiring the use of jump pads to get up, and low gravity tubes to get down without getting hurt.

In order to get to the enemy base, you must first travel up to the very top level where the two paths from each base all meet, then choose a path and jump down to their level….

My screen shots and impressions coming up after the jump.

Wiisports Boxing Headspin KO

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

Well I thought I would give a shot at plugging my Wii into my PC to do some recording of me playing my Wii, and there I was playing a game of boxing recording it all and because I was recording it was lagging a little bit and I was about to stop the recording and I pressed the + button which is suppose to pause games, (since I was down to one hit point and it was flashing) however it did not, something I learnt from this experience. So I kept on playing and just started laying the shots into my opponent, since I was close to being hit down. I managed to lay the shots into my opponent and due to what I presume must be a bug or some strange (yet cool) physics in Boxing he topled back and started head spining almost like a breakdancing move.

All I can say is how lucky I was that I did not stop the recording, I would of been kicking myself had I stopped it.

Stargate Worlds: Ten Ton Hammer Interview

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

sgw_3.jpg

Ten Ton Hammer have an interview with a new member of the SGW team, Kevin Balentine, who is the new PR manager for CME.

Part of the interview is about Kevin Balentine, what he did before he got involved with SGW, and why/how he jumped into gaming and joined CME.

Ten Ton Hammer: I’d like to go back to your statement that the fantasy market has been saturated but not the Sci-Fi. To date, none of the Sci-Fi MMOs have been terribly successful. Take Earth and Beyond, Matrix and even Star Wars Galaxies. What makes SGW different?

Kevin: We’ve got two things stacked in our favor: One, we have a truly world-class development team that has been assembled over the last year and a half. Our credits read like a who’s who in gaming. Two, we’ve got several different gameplay options that will appeal to a wide variety of gamers. Oh, and of course, the Stargate is the perfect jumping off point for an MMORPG.

Sure is a Stargate MMORPG is certainly one of the best platforms you could start with for an MMORPG the ability to just travel to other planets within the game, almost instantaneously is one of the key points of why the game will be fantastic, and if clans/guilds/alliance could take control of planets well that sure would make the game something would it not?

Ten Ton Hammer: Is there anything upcoming that we can look forward to from the team?

Kevin:We’re making plans to go to Vancouver in March to be a part of Creation’s Stargate Convention. We’re real excited about meeting the fans face to face and telling them where we are at that point.

For those of you lucky enough to beable to go to the Stargate convention I am sure that CME will have some fantastic news to bring out to the Stargate community where they are progressing with the game, and ideas that have been put into action. You can read the full interview at Ten Ton Hammers site here.

Tremulous Wins Moddb

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

105_thumb.jpg

Tremulous has won out in the moddb contest in several key areas, those being.

  • 1st Place: Player’s Choice Standalone Game of the Year
  • Honorable Mention: Genre Award: Action
  • Honorable Mention: Editor’s Choice Standalone Game of the Year

It is rather difficult to find the actual awards on the Moddb site but here is a link to the forum discussion where things were cleared up about the awards.

UPDATE: They have now posted it on the Tremulous site here.

I must congradulate the Tremulous dev team for they surely did deserve this award, for the fantastic open source game they have created and I know that we will be expecting more great things from Tremuous in the future.

Odamex - Free Doom

Monday, January 29th, 2007

Odamex is a free, open source multiplayer Doom engine, that went into production way back in July 2005, and now here in 2007 the first alpha 0.1 has been released. Unfortunately I am still unable to compile the Linux version of it on my box due to some SDL errors and problems that I am working on fixing so be sure to see a mini review of it soon once I have fixed the problems sorted

Although from what I have seen from screen shots it looks very good with the good old doom graphics that we grew up with. I will get it running under Linux an give you more info about it as soon as I can.

Open Arena

Friday, January 26th, 2007

Open Arena is a standalone mod off the Q3 engine, in fact I would say that it is pretty much a copy of Quake 3 Arena but open source. It is only in its beta stages at the moment. I tested out their latest beta 0.6.0, and to be honest I was pretty impressed with it, sure the models of the characters and weapons can sure use some improvement, but what do you expect when it is still only a beta. 0.6.0 included bots which are pretty good if you want to train up before playing online, they also randomly shout abuse at you.

I am not going to give Open Arena a full review until the first final version of it comes out so to be fair on the game. But I do highly suggest that you go to their website, and download it and give it a shot for your-self. Again like Tremulous there are Windows, Linux and Mac versions of the game, so their really is nothing to stop you from giving it ago and seeing what its like.

Screen shots after the break.

Here at The1Qwerty.com we are going to start covering SGW (Stargate Worlds) and will be bringing you the latest news on the development of the game as it comes. Before we get into the interview that took place id just like to spend a little bit of time informing you about Stargate Worlds and show off a few screen shots of the game. Now onto the interview, the interview was done by MMORPG.com and they interviewed Dan Elggren who is the Senior Producer for the upcoming game and here is what he had to say.

MMORPG.com:
Give us some idea of the technology that will make its way into the game. Will players be able to develop and specialize in understanding and creating different forms of technology we have seen in SG-1 and Atlantis?
Dan Elggren
Crafting will play a big role in Stargate Worlds. Players will be able to create new items and upgrades in a way that mirrors the “arms race” that was such a big part in the series. Alien artifacts can be “reverse engineered” and the technology used in crafting recipes.

MMORPG.com:
How has development been coming along? Has the team been able to meet design goals? When do you expect to reach large milestones like Beta and Launch?
Dan Elggren
Right now, we’re very happy with the way development is progressing. We’re meeting our internal goals and we’ve already got some incredible art and stories coming together. We’re still a little early in the process to nail down dates for beta and launch, but we expect to be making some big announcements soon.
