Review: Wii Classic Controller

Monday, April 30th, 2007

With the ability to download old school retro Nintendo games via the Wii’s Virtual Console (VC), has come the need of a new controller, the Classic Controller was born. Nintendo launched the Classic controller with the Wii several months ago.

I personally think that the VC is a really smart thing that Nintendo have incorporated into the Wii, letting them sell their old games to us again. Great marketing strategy.

However this review is not about the VC (although it is very much related) but rather the classic controller. I honestly don’t like it! The first time I picked it up I thought wow this is really uncomfortable and not ergonomic at all. I would of expected Nintendo to of put some effort into making the controller ergonomic and comfortable to hold for extended periods of play. It seems however that they are not worrying about it.

Another thing, I think that they could have had the cable that connects it to the Wii remote come out of the top of the controller and not the bottom, then it could flow from the top of the classic controller into the bottom of the Wii remote, this is only a minor let down.

Nintendo could of put more effort into the design of the controller after all it will keep us playing on it for longer. Another thing that is rather poor about the Classic Controller is, how it can sometimes get the neutral positions messed up during loadings. (Usually happens if you are accidentally leaning on the controller or moving the thumb pads whilst loading). At least there is a way to fix this, all you have to do is hold the + button,- button, a button and b button at the same time for three seconds. This will then reset the controller to be neutral.

Put this out of your mind and the Classic controller does exactly what it is suppose to do, let you play the old school retro games that you can download via the VC. The controls on the thumb pad seem to be very accurate and smooth to use in all the games I have played.

Another neat thing about the Classic Controller is you can use it instead of the Wii remote to navigate the channels, which is really great if you are laying down playing Wii or don’t feel like flailing your arms around all the time.

Final thoughts on the Classic Controller:

  • I think Nintendo could of put more effort into the design of the controller, making it more ergonomic and comfortable to hold
  • Being able to play games on your Wii (VC games) without having to swing your arms all over the place is fantastic
  • The ability to use the Classic Controller to browse the Wii menu and channels is a really great thing no need to use the Wii remote for everything

CoD 4: Modern Warfare Trailer Released

Saturday, April 28th, 2007

An awesome trailer for Call of Duty 4 has just been released. It looks awesome, lets hope that it won’t be like CoD 3 and miss the PC, because from what is shown in the trailer it is very impressive. All of a sudden the whole idea of CoD leaving the WWII arena doesn’t look so bad.

Nintendo Beaten To Wii Gun Controller

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

More controller news today!

Nintendo have been beaten to releasing a Wii gun peripheral. Piranha a third party controller manufacture, have released a Wii gun expansion controller. I wish I could read what ever language it is written in. Using my power of deduction and looking at the picture you simply slide the Wii remote into the slot in the controller, and I presume that it fits well so that pushing the trigger causes the B button to be moved via some mechanical operation.

Wii To Get A QWERTY Keyboard

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

Yes you will be able to find me on your Nintendo Wii soon (besides the virtual on screen keyboard). According to a Gamer Informer article, Nintendo have plans to release a keyboard for the Nintendo Wii. Which will be very useful for web browsing, along with messaging other Wii’s. Do many people do that though?

I am all for a Wii keyboard as it will increase the speed at which I can do things on the Wii net browser. Although most things are still better to be done on a PC.

Trem Skills Finished

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

Thats the end of my Tremulous skills programme. At least for the moment anyway. I have decided to end the Trem Skills series, because of increased workload in RL. Sorry that I have left it hanging on base building.

I may continue the progamme in the future, however, I will not make a solid statement on that. What I will tell you though is that I do plan to release an eBook based off of my Trem Skills series, with loads of new content to help you get your game on in Tremulous. This won’t be for quite some time looking towards the end of this year early next year.

For those of you that were following my Trem Skills series don’t worry because I will continue to cover the latest gaming news, my views and impressions. Along with other things to help you Get your Game ON!

Trem Skills #14

Monday, April 23rd, 2007

Part 14 of my Tremulous Skills programme. Helping you to play Tremulous better.

Trem Skills #14 Deals with the basics of building of a base.

Your base is your life line, without it you can not realistically win a game. Because of this it is important to have a good base setup.

A good base setup consists of:

  • Reactor/OM (required to power your building)
  • Multiple spawns (Two is fine 3 is preferred to speed up spawn time)
  • Plenty of base defence to keep spawns and Reactor/OM safe

Of course that is just the basics of it. I will discuss the basics for building a base for each team in future posts and advanced setups as well.

TK vs Bamn Tremulous War

Sunday, April 22nd, 2007

I was lucky enough to be accepted to referee/admin the Tremulous clan war between TK and Bamn. I think it was a great game (I only saw the first one was not able to ref the second). The result was TK-0 Bamn-2.

Congrats to the Bamn Clan on their clean sweep of the war. Also a great mention must be given to the TK clan who put up a very good fight towards the end of the first round holding off the advancing S3 aliens very well. I was really surprised with how long they lasted once sudden death kicked in, it was however inevitable that they would be taken down in sudden death as they were camping in the base far to often. Humans (TK) never really pushed up anywhere and were to scared to leave the base to pursue weak alien units.

Scores from first game

Download the demo I recorded of the first war. I advise both TK and Bamn to watch the footage as it will help them to see where they can both improve for future clan wars. If you are just keen to see other clan wars taking place by all means download it as well.

Scores from second game

I did record a live commentary that I did of the war although not sure how im going to put the demo and it together unless I frapped the demo or something. I don’t really have the time to do that now since back to school. The quality of the commentary was not as good as I was hoping for a few pops and distorted bits. Consequently I am not sure if I will upload it for download.
